FAQs

Part 146 is a qualification standard set by the New York State Unified Court System for mediators who wish to serve on court-affiliated mediation panels. To meet Part 146 requirements, mediators must complete a minimum of 24 hours of basic mediation training, along with additional hours of training in court-specific procedures. Some courts may also require supervised mediation observations or mentorship.

Earning a Part 146 qualification enhances a mediator’s credentials and increases their eligibility to mediate disputes within the New York courts.

Earning a Part 146 qualification provides both practical and professional advantages, making it one of the most widely recognized mediation credentials available.

  • Cross-Jurisdictional Practice – Some attorneys and mediators have cross-jurisdictional goals and may wish to work in both the UK and New York legal markets. Part 146 accreditation makes this easier.
  • New York Court Opportunities – Those seeking to mediate in New York courts will meet the eligibility criteria required to apply for mediation rosters.
  • Prestige & Professional Growth – Holding a qualification accredited by CMC, IMI, CIArb, and the New York Court System makes this one of the most comprehensive and globally recognized mediation certifications available.

Whether you plan to mediate in New York or simply want to enhance your credentials, this qualification adds significant value to your professional profile.

The conversion course is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of the New York mediation system and ensure compliance with Part 146 requirements. Topics covered will include:

  • Overview of the New York Court System – Understanding how mediation fits within the judicial framework.
  • Additional Mediation Methods & Settlement Conferences – Learning techniques used in New York court-based mediations, including judicial settlement processes.
  • New York Ethics Rules for Mediators – A review of professional conduct standards and court-specific ethical obligations.
  • Joint Sessions & Caucusing Techniques – Exploring when and how to use joint sessions and private caucuses effectively.

This course builds upon existing mediation knowledge while addressing the unique aspects of mediating in New York.
