Phoenix Dispute Solutions is the world’s most widely accredited mediation training provider. We are dedicated to offering the most comprehensive education in mediation from both a regulatory and academic standpoint. This course marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter, as Phoenix broadens the areas of expertise it covers to include family-focused and relational practice training alongside its established civil, workplace and international programmes.

This specialist CLE/CPD course—Neurodiversity in Mediation: Rethinking Practice for Every Brain—developed and delivered by Katy Harris, equips mediators to better support neurodivergent clients through inclusive, reflective and adaptive practice. Drawing on lived experience, practitioner insight and current research, the session explores how neurodivergence can affect communication, regulation and participation in mediation, and offers practical tools to transform everyday practice.

Delivered live online via Zoom, the course is interactive and includes short breakout exercises (in groups of 2, 3 or 4 for ~5 minutes) to embed learning in real time and contributes towards recognised CLE/CPD requirements across family, civil and workplace contexts.

FAQS

This course introduces the neurodiversity paradigm and its relevance to mediation. It recognises autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia and Tourette’s as natural variations in human neurology and examines how standard processes can create unintentional barriers. You will learn how to adopt a neuro-affirming approach that centres understanding, connection and accessibility.

Neurodivergent children and adults are disproportionately represented in high-conflict systems and may face barriers to equitable participation when needs are not recognised or accommodated.

Inclusive practice improves comprehension, reduces dysregulation and supports durable outcomes—particularly in family and workplace settings.

A practical, evidence-informed session covering:

  • Communication differences (literal language, processing time, clear framing and visual supports)

  • Emotional regulation (grounding, co-regulation, naming emotions, externalising the problem)

  • Executive function & environment (checklists, step-by-step guidance, reminders, chunking tasks)

  • Sensory considerations (space, lighting, movement breaks; virtual adaptations)

  • Interactive tools (brain games, traffic-light tools, co-regulation anchors, visual planners, vocabulary prompts, anonymised case-mapping)

  • Breakout activity: a short creative negotiation exercise in groups of 2, 3 or 4 (~5 minutes)

Mediators (family/civil/commercial), solicitors, barristers, judges, parenting coordinators, social workers and allied professionals seeking to embed inclusive practice and meet CLE/CPD requirements.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify common barriers for neurodivergent clients in mediation

  • Implement communication, regulation and environmental adjustments

  • Integrate universal design while tailoring individual accommodations

  • Use simple tools (visuals, checklists, prompts) to enhance participation

  • Reflect on and adapt mediator style to be more neuro-affirming

The programme is delivered live online.

  • Duration: 1.5 hours

  • Time: 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM (6th December, 2025)
