Joe was elected to the American Law Institute in 2013. He is an adjunct professor of law at the George Mason University School of Law, and has served on the faculty of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. He has been ranked by Chambers USA each year from 2010 to 2019: Chambers USA 2019 ranked Joe in Band 2 for General Litigation (District of Columbia) (until his retirement from private practice); he was ranked in Band 3 from 2010 through 2018.

Joe co-chaired the Mediation Committee of the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution. He has participated in presentations about mediation before the ABA Dispute Resolution Section, the D.C. Bar, the Association of Corporate Counsel – National Capital Region and law firms.

Prior to forming Esposito Mediation, LLC, Joe practiced civil litigation for over 38 years. Following federal trial and appellate judicial clerkships, he practiced on Wall Street before moving to Washington in 1982. He was a partner at Hunton Andrews Kurth and Akin Gump. His trial experience included patent, tortious interference, employment discrimination, breach of fiduciary duty, antitrust, breach of contract, customs fraud, federal corporate tax, legal malpractice, and partnership fraud and accounting cases. He has also litigated in a wide variety of other areas, including the False Claims Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, defamation, federal securities law, toxic tort, construction and subsidence, anti-SLAPP, state tax, borrower class actions, lender liability, derivative actions, Lanham Act, breach of warranty, bankruptcy adversary proceedings, and public accommodations cases.

Joe brings to his mediation practice traits that served his clients well when he was litigating: persistence, patience, tenacity, a willingness and ability to listen and hear both what is said and what is unsaid, and thorough preparation.

Further, because of the breadth and variety of his litigation practice, Joe, of necessity, developed an ability to assess expeditiously the strengths and weaknesses of cases, which proves useful in his mediation practice. And he has considerable experience in speaking candidly about case strengths and weaknesses, which in appropriate circumstances can be an effective tool in mediation.

Esposito Mediation, LLC welcomes the opportunity to assist you in resolving disputes. Joe will be happy to speak with you and/or your adversary prior to engaging Esposito Mediation to discuss experience, approach, and any concerns or questions you may have.
